One more tackle on the XL ads

Posted by Renee Hopkins Callahan

Olivier has a great post on the Super Bowl ads below, and I just want to add a few observations. Having now read some of the mainstream media coverage of the Super Bowl ads, I'm surprised that many of the spots that my admittedly small-sample group (six people) liked the best are the ones the "experts" hated. We liked the MacGyver "Priceless" spot, Bud's "magic refrigerator" and the baby Clydesdale, for example, and Ad Age's Bob Garfield hated those. I have no idea what that means.

If you missed some of the ads, you can see them here.

And here's more:
Edge The Third Culture has published a regrettably short article on an experiment performed yesterday at the UCLA Ahmanson-Lovelace Brain Mapping Center -- "Marco Iacoboni and his group used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure brain responses in a group of subjects while they were watching the Super Bowl ads." The winners? Bud's "office" ad and "I'm going to Disney." Losers: Bud's "secret refrigerator" and Aleve.

Slate's Seth Stevenson tackles the Super Bowl ads here.

UPDATE: I'm still not sure what this says about me and my friends, but the Bud "magic refrigerator" ad was chosen #1 and the baby Clydesdale #2 by the USA Today AdMeter focus groups. Add your vote and see the ratings here. If you're a subscriber, the Wall Street Journal has a poll going too.

UPDATE #2: AdWeek has the numbers from Tivo replays of the Super Bowl commercials. Of course, who knows whether people replayed an ad because they missed it or because they really liked it? Nevertheless, the Ameriquest ads came in at #1 and #2.
